I have a LA Sete ALTO PRO sax serial number 412XX. Do you have any info on this?

Thanks for getting in touch. One source I have says that LA Sete (with accents in various place on the Sete) was the "house brand of Barthold brothers music store chain in Southern California and of Splevins Music Center, 8834 W. Pico Boulevard of Los Angeles, selling band instruments and dissolved in 1967.

A certain number of LA Sete instruments were made in Germany by Keilwerth. Here's a question, is there a little JK logo under the right thumb rest? MOST Keilwerth stencils had that.

A "stencil horn" is one made by a major manufacturer with someone else's brand name on it. For example, in the 1920s Conn made saxophones for Wurlitzer, Buescher made saxophones for Selmer, etc.

The serial numbers on stencil horns don't usually follow any pattern, since they start over again whenever the brand name ordering the stencil horns starts ordering from another manufacturer.

That said, many of the Keiwerth stencils followed the Keilwerth serial number sequence. If that's the case of yours, it was built in 1961.

Sorry I can't be any more definite, but only a few thousand of these were sold under the LA Sete brand name, and they were ordered by two different big SoCal music stores, so there aren't a lot around for comparison.

BTW, Keilwerth made some very nice horns in the 1960s and 1970s. If you've had yours set up right, it probably plays pretty sweetly.

Hope this helps,
