I have a 1938 Buesher Aristocrat alto and I was wondering what mouthpeice might be recommended for it to get the best possible sound from it. Also I am having some trouble with the lowest notes. On the older horns like this is this a common thing?
Thanks

Thanks for getting in touch.

You don't tell me where you live. If you live near a full-service music store, you may want try out mouthpieces they have. What are you using now?

I live in an area where choices are limited. Whenever I acquire a new horn, I start out with a Selmer C*, since that's the most consistent on most horns. But individual horns and players will find other mouthpieces more useful in the long run. If I was playing professionally, I'd probably upgrade more myself. But the C* does 95% of what I need for the kind of music and places I play, and I'm not sure a $300-$400 upgrade mouthpiece would make things any better for me. Also having a similar mouthpiece on all my horns helps me go back and forth more easily.

Finally, if you're having trouble with the low notes, get a good sax repair person to go over it. You can have good pads but still have them out of alignment (they call it "registration."). That said, on some horns, a better mouthpiece can help you hit the low notes better. But I wouldn't buy a mouthpiece to solve THAT problem unless I knew the horn was in optimum condition first.

Hope this helps - Paul
