A reader writes:
Many years ago I bought a silver tenor saxophone. On the front stencil in elaborate type font and fancy design, it has the brand name "Lyon and Healy", and the model "American". Near the bottom on the back side, it has the text "Low Pitch" and a serial number of 36114. Please let me know if you can tell me anything about the possible year of manufacture. Thank you for your time.

------------------------------------------

Lion and Healy never made their own saxes. Instead they usually bought them from Buescher. Some Lion and Healy saxes had all the Buescher features and consequently are about the same value today as a Buescher in equivalent condition. That said, most companies stopped making stencils around 1930, during an age of experimentation. So most Buescher stencils are based on the Buescher True Tone, which came into its own about 1916 and was discontinued in 1932.

L&H sometimes used serial number different than Buescher's so that doesn't always help.

If you can send me photos from every angle, I can tell you if it's a True Tone stencil and how close it is to the Buescher full feature horn.

Have a great day - Paul
