Post subject:  Home Recording Links and Tips

I've done "home recording" since the first home 4-track reel to reels were available, but needless to say, I have hundreds of times the capacity now in my laptop. Still, it helps to understand basic recording and acoustic principles and to know something about arranging music before you assume that anyone with enough money for high-end gear can automatically churn out professional-sounding recordings.

Years ago, I wrote a book on this subject, but much of what I wrote has been superceded by computer-based apps and synths, so this section is going to be mostly links to current resources I think will be helpful

The first resource I'm listing is a free pamphlet from Discmakers:

An engineer/writer named Bobby Owsinski occasionally publishes free tips worth knowing about. He also has a higher sales-pitch to free information ratio than I usually like. (I like to recommend folks who give you enough information to judge whether they really have "the goods" and have your best interests in mind BEFORE they start deluging you with "offers.")

But occasionally he sends something useful and free. So you might consider getting on his mailing list for those. Just be prepared to get a lot of "buy my stuff" e-mails in between the useful, free information. If you WANT to buy his stuff, that's fine, too, of course. :-)

This one is from Clay Mills, explaining how he used a small home studio to demo a song that later became a hit record.
