This thread was originally under the "Develop Your Musicianship" forum, but I wanted to have more space to expand without just creating a jumble. Added a brief article about why you need to learn to write songs, even if you don't think that is your "forte." For example, some opportunities use songwriting ability as a "litmus test" for your overall musicianship. http://schooloftherock.com/html/develop ... ting_.html Several links to helpful resources are included. |

Here's a link to a free book on songwriting from DiscMakers. These are never anything like exhaustive, but they usually give you a few good ideas - Companies like DiscMakers, CDBaby, TuneCore, etc., only make money if YOU succeed, so they like churning out what they perceive to be useful content: http://www.discmakers.com/request/songw ... riting.asp Of course, now they'll spam you forever, but that's fine, too, really. |

From Clay Mills: How to Build a Better Song Catalog. One of the points is to have a variety of styles, also more "cutting edge" than retro. You don't want to be in front of someone important and have them ask if you have a certain kind of song that you ought to have, based on the genres and styles you usually work, and you come up empty. https://songtown.com/how-to-build-a-bet ... g-catalog/ |

Attention songwriters and wannabe songwriters: Hit songwriters Clay Mills and Marty Dodson are offering 6-week classes in Melody and Lyrics respectively, enrollment closing soon. There is a fee, but you'll find it's less than a lot of folks charge for similar programs, and these guys are a lot more qualified to teach this stuff. No, I don't get paid for recommending their programs, I have just seen enough of what they do to have far more confidence in them than anyone else purporting to do the same thing. https://songtown.com/masterclass-2017-non-members/ |
