Back in the "good old days," a record exec would find some poor soul he liked, loan him money to make a record, promote his music, help him "develop" as an artist, and pay radio stations real money to get the song on the air. Then when the second album went nowhere, the "talent" was back on the street. Nowadays, they don't do any of that to speak of - even if you get a "record contract," you are essentially responsible for your own promotion and fan engagement. If you're an independent, most record companies won't sign you - regardless of talent - unless you've already proven that you can make money without them. But where do you start?
Today, a lot of "How to Make it in Music" blogs, free downloadable PDFs, etc., are really about how to promote your music, and the key to promotion these days is "fan engagement." No more going into a cave to record for six months, coming out with an eagerly awaited album that the record company has hyped so much that fans are standing in line to buy it. In the "old days," a fan's relationship was quite literally with the vinyl disk. Nowadays, fans expect to have a relationship of SOME sort with the artist. So you do what you can to relate to fans throughout the entire creative process, all the while doing what you can to improve your music and musicianship - and maintain your spiritual walk and committed relationships - at the same time.
We have a lot of resources to link to, but for now we're just getting started. Here's a sort of initial "checklist" of things you need to keep in mind as you develop your "promotion plan."

Just added an article on using local newspapers and internet resources to track down potential places to play. There is work involved, but you may find it rewarding, if not encouraging. http://schooloftherock.com/html/researc ... _gigs.html
