A reader writes: Paul, your understanding of Voltaire is misguided. The USA and freedom of religion could not have happened without Voltaire. We would be living in a Catholic nation had Voltaire not opened up the flood gates of decency. Volatire was was wealthy and went to bat for the poor and down trodden and at great personal expense (sound familiar). The man was a great mind and a great soul (undoubtedly with short comings). |

Unfortunately, part of this reader's response to me has been cut off. I pointed out that the United States wouldn't have been a "Catholic" nation, because a large part of it was first settled by Protestants. The reader reported that Voltaire worked sacrificially to help people who had been crushed by the system. And that was true. But that wasn't the point of my essay - the point of my essay was that Voltaire thought the way to destroy the kings and bishops who misused religion to justify their abuses was to attack the religion they claim to follow. Many people today feel the same way. Unfortunately, many "kings and bishops" in the USA today are claiming that their religion gives them the right to abuse the poor and reward the robber-barons who donate to their political campaigns and so-called charities. But every day their actions prove that they are not followers of the One who preached that "Blessed are the poor." Attacking Jesus is stupid. Learning about Jesus so you can expose the hipocracy of these modern-day "Sons of the Devil" (Jesus' words for the religious leaders of his day) would make more sense. |
